May is national bike month, and riding a bike can be great exercise for kids and adults. Consider taking advantage of the sunny spring weather to go on a family bike ride in the evening, or ride with your kids to run your errands around town on the weekend.
Because kids on bikes tend to be smaller and shorter, and therefore less visible, than adults on bikes, it’s particularly important for young riders to follow safe riding practices. A few important safety tips are listed below:
- Wear a properly fitting helmet every single time you get on your bike. Adjust the straps to make sure your helmet fits snugly and sits squarely on top of your head.
- Ride a bike that is a good size for you. If you cannot balance the bicycle with your toes while you are sitting on the seat, it is too high. Adjust the seat to fit you, or ride a different bike.
- Check the bicycle brakes, tires, chains and handlebars often, and keep them working properly.
- Keep reflectors on both the front and back of your bike. Attach a white headlight and a red, blinking rear light for riding in the evening and at night.
- Obey all traffic rules, and ride on the right side of the road (the same directions as cars). Before making a turn, point in the direction that you will ride so that cars and bikes behind you know your plans.
- Do not listen to music or talk on a cell phone while riding your bicycle. For your safety, you should be able to hear approaching cars and animals. Always be alert for things like loose gravel and potholes.
